Recent statistics indicate that young Victorians still make up the majority of people with serious injuries from transport accidents in Victoria.
According to these statistics, four in ten people admitted to hospital with spinal injuries from transport accidents were aged between 18 and 25 years old. The consequences of such injuries can have a dramatic impact on all aspects of a person's life, including their personal and professional relationships.
The statistics indicate that the number of people seriously injured on Victorian roads has dropped, although not as dramatically as the number of fatalities. The number of people injured has dropped by 40% since 2001, with the number of people suffering serious injuries falling by 10%.
Victoria also recorded its lowest rate in six years of people who had suffered the most serious of spinal injuries. In 2012-2013, the number of people who suffered quadriplegia or paraplegia from a traffic accident in Victoria was 11, compared with 25 in 2007-2008.
