Driving age is an experience issue

Experience is the word that keeps re-occurring in the debate over whether the driving age should be reduced. It is usually concerned with the extra driving experience that young people gain by getting their licence earlier. But experience is also what other states and countries have gained through having lower driving ages. The debate should not be an emotional one. It should not just quote road deaths. The debate should centre on what is the experience of other jurisdictions. If other communities have evaluated the benefits and costs of having a lower driving age then we must listen and wisely evaluate their experiences. Does a lower age cause a dramatic rise in accidents? Does a lower age help youth employment in the country? This is, fortunately, one area where Victoria isn't the pioneer so let us calmly learn from experience. If you or someone you know has been involved in a road accident, it is important to get the right advice. For information about your rights and entitlements, speak to the experts on (03) 9321 9988.
