A Senate Inquiry Report has resulted in an announcement of additional funding for mental health support and counselling for veterans struggling with the psychological consequences of their service.
The Federal Government has announced that an additional $6 million of funding will be allocated to Phoenix Australia, an institution specialising in post-traumatic stress disorder and its devastating ramifications. The additional funding was prompted by the report of the Senate Inquiry, which found that the additional challenges faced by returned service personnel deserved additional recognition and support.
The findings also support research conducted in other frontline industries that confirm the extra risk of psychiatric injury and distress faced by first responders. Victoria Police in particular have noted the unfortunately high rates of suicide and depression suffered by members.
