Funding grants to improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians

Management of the condition of freeways and large motorways is primarily the responsibility of VicRoads, with contribution from State and Federal Government as well. But smaller pathways, such as those used by pedestrians and cyclists, are often managed by local councils, who have a responsibility to ensure they are safe for use and free from hazards.

The TAC's Local Government Area Grants Program is designed to provide funding grants of up to $100,000 to local governments to analyse road safety issues, particularly those posed to pedestrians and cyclists, and assist in the implementation of innovative infrastructure treatments to address risks identified. The program can also provide grants for local councils to deliver education about hazardous road conditions and risks.

The importance of these types of safety improvements cannot be overstated. Of the 120 people who have lost their lives on Victorian roads in 2020 so far, 25 per cent of them were either a cyclist or a pedestrian.

In the financial year ending 2019, 786 pedestrians sustained injuries in transport accidents and required admission to hospital for treatment of these injuries. Over the same period, 532 cyclists required inpatient hospital treatment for transport accident related injuries.

Pedestrians and cyclists are particularly vulnerable road users, and often their injuries have a permanent and profound impact on their ability to earn an income and undertake their activities of daily living.

If you have been injured in a motor vehicle accident, it is important that you speak to an expert and get access to your entitlements early to assist with your rehabilitation journey. Call our TAC team on (03) 9321 9988.
