Heatwave spells trouble for workers

As Victoria prepares to swelter through another weekend of temperatures over 40 degrees, employers are reminded of their responsibility to protect the safety of their employees in such conditions.

Heat related illnesses, such as dizziness, fatigue and heat exhaustion are common ailments amongst many workers at this time of the year. It is important that employers adapt the working environment to accommodate their employees in these conditions.

Outdoor workers are particularly vulnerable to extreme conditions. Employers should ensure that workers are provided with basic protections such as wide brimmed hats, sunscreen and protective clothing if the conditions are particularly severe.

Although many heat related illnesses are temporary and resolve relatively quickly, they can have implications in the long term. For example, heat related fatigue can cause mistakes within the workplace, and can lead to permanent injuries.
