Victorian roads particularly hazardous over summer break

2020 has been an unimaginably difficult year for many in our community, and a year most of us will be glad to see an end to. As end of year festivities draw closer, police and community groups have raised concerns that this year might present more dangers than usual on Victorian roads. In particular, the number of motorists choosing to stay at home over the summer break, rather than travelling interstate or internationally, potentially creates even more hazards for summer road users.

Between December 1, 2019 and January 6, 2020, during the peak holiday travel period, 26 people were killed on Victorian roads, and 274 people were hospitalised with injuries from road crashes across the state, according to statistics released by the Transport Accident Commission (TAC). With more people at home this year, police will be keeping a particular look out for individuals in a rush to get to their next destination, or who have perhaps enjoyed too many celebratory drinks before getting behind the wheel of a car.

While the need to reconnect with family members and friends is understandable, the consequences of a serious transport accident can last much longer than just the festive season. The injuries arising from these accidents can permanently alter a person's ability to function in daily life, engage with family and friends, and earn an income. Even worse, some Victorians may not live to see the end of 2020. There is never a good time to suffer an injury or lose a loved one in an accident, but the Christmas period is particularly traumatic for victims and their families.

The TAC system offers benefits to assist injured people and their families cope with such changes, many of which are available regardless of who caused the accident. If you or someone you know has suffered an injury in a road or transport accident, we invite you to speak to one of our expert injury lawyers on (03) 9321 9988 to get accurate advice about the benefits you can access.

We wish you and your families a safe and happy festive break, and look forward to being of service to you in the new year.
