A recent "People Matter" Survey, of 18,000 public sector workers across the state, found that:
- more than a third of Victoria's public sector employees (36%) had witnessed bullying in the workplace last year; and
- a fifth of the respondents said they had experienced bullying in the past 12 months.
The People Matter Survey results are contained in a report on the state of the public sector, which employs 264,000 workers of which 62,000 were invited to take part in the survey in 2011. Crucially, only three per cent had experienced bullying and formally complained. A quarter of employees surveyed didn't feel confident they would be protected or were unsure how they would be treated if they reported improper conduct.
