Young employees vulnerable to injuries at work

Data recently released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics has found that workplace injuries were on the rise for the youngest workers, with the rate of injuries to employees aged 15-19 increasing in the 2013-2014 financial year, compared to data obtained in the 2009-2010 financial year.

The age group most likely to suffer a work-related injury was the 50-54 year old bracket, followed by the 15-19 year old group. According to the statistics, Tasmania recorded the highest rate of work-related injuries, with New South Wales reporting the lowest number of workplace injuries. The trend across Australia indicated a general decline in the occurrence of injuries at work.

The overwhelming majority of injured individuals were employees, with only 10% being owner managers. Machinery operators and drivers were the most likely to be injured at work, with labourers recording the second highest rate of injuries. Clerical and administrative workers had the lowest rate of injuries occurring over the course of their employment.

The most common type of injuries to occur in the workplace were sprains and strains, with lifting, pushing, pulling or bending being the main culprit to cause trauma.
